Khamit Kinks Salon
In
Fall 2006, Khamit
Kinks moved from
Manhattan to return to its Brooklyn roots, completing a circular
journey begun in 1989, when it first opened in a Brooklyn brownstone.
By 1996 the business had outgrown that shop and was moved to TriBeCa,
where it thrived for a decade. Now it’s back to contribute to
Brooklyn’s cultural and commercial renaissance, bringing with
it a history of community-connected business, international acclaim and
meaningful accomplishment, as well as a roster of loyal clients and
high-profile devotees. Celebrity clients have included Stevie Wonder,
Oprah Winfrey, Angela Bassett, Lenny Kravitz, Queen Latifah and many
others. New clients also routinely book appointments from Japan,
England, the Caribbean and other places across the globe.
Khamit Kinks has long enjoyed a reputation as an innovator among the
premier salons serving people of color. Its standard of excellence and
its authority in the natural hair care arena was born of founder Anu Prestonia's
passion for the styling arts. Anu found that inventive styling
incorporating cultural heritage could have transformative effects in
the lives women of color. She believed they deserved a top-notch salon
experience and delighted in holding up an affirming mirror to show both
men and women the beauty that was theirs by birthright.
Passion
is catching, as we all know, and before long, Khamit Kinks was widely
cited as the best place to have your locs started or groomed, to get
that haircut you saw in the magazine, some fabulous thread-wraps for
your African wedding or amazingly beautiful braids to last through
several work weeks. The salon also introduced several popular styles,
including Casamas Braids, Senegalese Twists, Cherokee and Trini Braids.
Khamit Kinks’ styles have graced the front page of The New
York Times and the covers and pages of Essence Magazine and many
industry publications. The salon has provided stylist services for
films and fashion shows and has been featured on The View, Queer Eye
for the Straight Guy and other TV shows, including network and other
news programs on NY-1, CNN, FOX-5 and TV Japan.
Having moved to Manhattan, the salon has a
more diverse clientele and continues to focus on quality and service.
Khamit Kinks continues to set the standard and start the trends that
all others follow.
Khamit Kinks has provided dozens of young
women with a profession by training and mentoring them in the business.
The salon has also hosted domestic violence, self-image and other
workshops for people of all ages. In addition, Anu created and
distributes a Khamit Kinks line of all-natural hair and body products
to rave reviews. Interested not only in healthy hair, Anu has been
committed to a healthy lifestyle for over twenty years. Anu is also a
Certified Hatha Yoga Instructor and makes a concerted effort to
encourage both staff and clients to practice healthy eating and living
habits for a healthy life and healthy hair.
